‘Agarita En’ is a Japanese inspired garden I completed in Fall 2023. The garden follows principles of a traditional Japanese stroll garden, but takes inspiration from native Texan landscapes.
A dry river runs through the center of the garden, shade plantings are reminiscent of the moist, cool grottos of the Texas hill country, and boulders with desert specimens are remind us of the dramatic West Texas landscape.
Like any stroll garden, this garden is meant to transport the viewer, as they mindfully take in the space and depart from day-to-day life.
Elements of ‘Mitate-mono’ (to see an object anew) are incorporated, using previously discarded materials from the home, such as vintage window weights, bricks and old pottery shards.
